Overview
What you will make
Join Izzy for a day weaving a traditional round basket that can be used to hold fruit, or alternatively as a berry basket. A very simple handle to collect with is an option. In this day course you will learn to weave the base of a basket using a weave called pairing. You will learn a technique called waling, used in most baskets as a weave to strengthen structural integrity, and you'll learn to finish the basket off with a simple track border. What you will learn
select your willow
prepare and weave the basket base
insert side stakes
use waling technique to build the walls of the basket
weave a simple track border (if there's time I may offer a 3 behind 1, but may keep it simple)
option to add a simple handle if its going to be a berry basket.
trim and tidy up the joins
Meet your tutor: Izzy Adams
Izzy is a multidisciplinary creative based in Brighton. Her main creative outlets include music and weaving, and she offers an assortment of workshops for these two modalities, and often likes to mix the two and get the weavers singing and the singers metaphorically weaving. Izzy experiences weaving to be a super grounding practice, and see's so much value in gathering to create something from natural materials, with our hands. She finds the weaving process more than just a physical experience, but a continuation of her own practice in bringing more awareness to the present moment, learning to sit with challenges, meet discomfort, and find the best way to be rooted and aligned (all part of the weaving process, that also trickles out to life at large).
Izzy runs courses teaching traditional round baskets and teaches in the summer offering a range of different beginner friendly weaving projects such as bird feeders, sunflowers, tension trays, berry baskets, bigger baskets, and more baskets! The majority of Izzy's work is with music, but she loves to dip her toes in all kinds of creative modalities, and alongside her mum who has been teaching for 20+ years, she has woven; a coffin for her grandma, 1.8 metre tall horses, ceiling high tree's and more.
