Wednesday 23rd - 10am-4pm
Thursday 24th - 10am-4pm
Saturday 26th - Student Showcase at Lewes Basketry Festival
This two-day workshop is suitable for beginners. Coiling is one of the oldest basketry techniques, where material is wrapped and stitched around a core. Using a solid core and cotton yarn, you will learn how to start (the trickiest part!) and change colour to create different patterns. You will also learn how different stitches create different textures, and how to create the shape you want as well as finishing with a neat border. Those with some experience of coiling can experiment with more complex patterns or forms. Learning this process will start off your life as a coiler - an activity that is easily portable and expressive.
- Starting the coil
- Wrapping the core
- Stitching
- Creating the border
Course Tutor: Kim Winter
Kim Winter uses traditional basketry techniques to create contemporary sculptural pieces. Sometimes these may be functional vessels, but mostly they are artworks – she loves the challenge of pushing the boundaries to make original basketry forms. With a strong focus on form and materiality, Kim often echoes structures and processes from nature in her art, from the mathematical basis for a spiral shell to the chemistry of leaf prints on pavements. She often incorporates found objects in her pieces: making cordage from dead daffodil stems, coiling around discarded fruit packaging, or weaving bindweed into vessels.
Kim completed the two-year City Lit Basketry Course in 2022 and regularly exhibits her work with Prism Textiles Group. She also edits the Basketmakers’ Association Journal, published three times a year.
